Elderly women from Tlaxcala discuss climate change: Knowledge, perceptions, and emotions

Abstract
In the Glasgow Climate Pact, agreed at COP26, children, youth, women, people with disabilities, and indigenous peoples are mentioned, but not the elderly, even though they are disproportionately affected by the threats of climate change. In this manuscript, we analyze the social representations that elderly women have regarding climate change. Through participatory methodologies, the cognitive, affective, and symbolic contents of their natural knowledge on the subject were identified; the contextualization of the symbolic relationships that influence the construction of representations and the field of representation through which elderly women interpret the effects of climate change in their community through their ideas, knowledge, and understanding. Elderly women are the ones who share strategies for actions at different scales and of different types to care for, protect, and restore the environment. Therefore, it is essential to include elderly women as key actors in the fight against climate change, as they possess knowledge, history, forms of community and intergenerational organization, and mobilization.
