Abstract

Afro-tourism (AT) is an emerging tourism concept that seeks to promote the involvement of Afro-descendant communities in tourism activities. Despite its growing development in several Latin American countries, its conceptualization and implementation in Mexico remain limited, particularly in regions with a historical presence of Afro-descendant populations. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze the conceptualization of AT and examine experiences developed in Latin America in order to identify opportunities for its potential implementation in Mexico, particularly in the state of Veracruz.

Methodologically, an exploratory study was conducted based on a review of scientific literature, institutional documents, and tourism experiences implemented in Latin America. The analysis focused on three main topics: tourism experiences, social inclusion, and local development. The results indicate that AT contributes to strengthening cultural identity, promoting Afro-descendant entrepreneurship, and generating economic opportunities in different Latin American contexts. Furthermore, the findings suggest that Mexico and the state of Veracruz possess cultural resources, historical heritage, and institutional conditions that could support the development of Afro-tourism initiatives aimed at fostering social inclusion and local development. It is concluded that Afro-tourism represents a viable alternative for increasing the visibility of Afro-Veracruzan communities and promoting their participation in tourism-based local development.
